IEP Meeting request

About IEP meeting request

The IEP team is required by law to meet at least once per year and to complete assessments and hold a triennial IEP meeting at least once every three years. You have the right to request an IEP meeting whenever you believe it is necessary.

In order to make scheduling easier and quicker, I suggest that you provide your availability.

For example, you may give specific days and times that you are available in the next two weeks. Or, depending on your schedule, you may decide to tell the school that you are available except on certain days and times. Or, you may say for instance, “We are available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings.”

You will want to provide a brief reason for why you are calling the IEP meeting. Usually, I begin with, “My child’s IEP is not meeting his unique needs.”
Then you will follow up with your concerns, which may be something like, his behavior plan is not working or his behavior aide has been absent too frequently from school.

Most schools do not schedule IEP meetings after school hours. That has to do with teacher contracts.

You will need to put your name and address and other information to make the letter particular to your child’s needs. The content of the letter is written in first person plural or as if it is coming from two parents. Change the plural pronouns (we, us, our) to singular pronouns (I, me, my) if the letter is coming from one parent.

Whether submitting the letter by email or hand delivery, please see “About Submitting Documents.

Remember to consult your state laws or the Procedural Safeguards provided by the school because timelines in your state may differ from those delineated in federal special education laws.
